Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim delivered a brutally honest assessment of his side after their 3-1 home defeat to Brighton, admitting they may be the worst team in the club’s 131-year history.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The loss to Brighton at Old Trafford marked United’s 10th defeat of the season and their fourth in six home league matches since Amorim took charge in November. It also set a historic low—for the first time since the 1893-94 season, United have lost six of their first 12 home games.
WHAT AMORIM SAID
Speaking in a post-match press conference, Amorim did not hold back:
“I am not naïve. We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. We have to acknowledge that and change that.”
The Portuguese manager recognized the frustration of the fans and the club’s hierarchy:
“In 10 games in the Premier League, we won three. Imagine this for a Man United fan. Imagine this for me. You are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. Imagine that. We need to survive this moment.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
United’s home form has collapsed, with losses to Newcastle, Bournemouth, and Nottingham Forest prior to Brighton’s victory. Their only positive result at Old Trafford in recent weeks came via a dramatic 12-minute hat-trick from Amad Diallo in a 3-1 comeback win over Southampton, the league’s bottom club.
Amorim acknowledged the massive gap between United and their opponents:
“The opponents are better than us in many details. We cannot be consistent. I am not helping my players in the moment. It is a hard moment. We have to acknowledge we are in a very difficult situation, all the bad records, losing games at home, losing in the Premier League, we are underperforming.”
DID YOU KNOW?
- United managed just one shot on target against Brighton—the penalty from Bruno Fernandes that briefly made it 1-1.
- Despite having the second-highest wage bill in the Premier League and spending over £600 million on players in the last three years, United continue to struggle.
WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD?
The Red Devils will now shift their focus to the Europa League, where they face Rangers on Thursday in their second-to-last group stage match. They will then return to domestic action with a Premier League clash against Fulham on Sunday.
Amorim admitted that with such a relentless fixture schedule, there is little time to implement his philosophy:
“I knew that it was going to be hard to put a completely new idea in the moment, but when you lose games and don’t win three games in a row, it becomes really hard.”
“We are going to suffer because I will continue to do the same. The only way to help my players is to give them the tools to play in this way, but then without training, it is really hard.”
